‘The X Factor’ UK review: Beck Martin’s ‘Friday Night’; also, meet He Knows She Knows, Girl Next Door
Tonight, we press onward with “The X Factor” as the latest batch of auditions arrive — and we’re here to provide coverage of it every step of the way! Hopefully there is a chance to see some really interesting acts over the course of the hour set in London.
The funny thing is that it took almost 15 minutes to sift through some of the riffraff, and that included some guy who came on the show seemingly to live out his dream of being a judge. Seeing him pour on the compliments to someone, only to give her a “no” vote, may have been the funniest part of the entire show.
Now, let’s move on to some of the good acts.
Gifty Louise – She’s back! One year after she lost her voice in the thick of the competition, she returned with a sensational Mary J. Blige cover. She’s got tremendous pipes and a confidence that wasn’t quite there last year.
Girl Next Door – We dig the attitude, the amount of rehearsal that they put into this, and then also the choreography since girl groups are not easy to do. Our question for the time being is whether or not their voices are strong enough to sustain in the later rounds.
5 AM – The best group that we’ve seen on the show so far this season. Really slick choreography, and they have the singing voices to back up what they’re doing with the dancing. Most importantly, they all seem to be on board with what the band is and where they should go.
Kayleigh and Stefan – This is the first sign of madness from the judges tonight, putting through this odd father / daughter duo who sang “Bohemian Rhapsody” to each other.
He Knows She Knows – Anytime that we have a couple who audition together, there’s a part of us that wonders if it was an awkward dare that they accepted. Yet, they were really good and just the right kind of edgy. We do think that the “she knows” part of the group is superior, but the good news is that they seem aware that she is the better singer of the two. Also, the dude straight-up proposed after the audition. Can you imagine if she said “no” and ran off? Good thing that didn’t happen.
Beck Martin – Apparently he works as a gym instructor, which seems right sine this seemed more like a workout video than an actual performance. He’s a terrible singer, yet his “Friday Night” track was bizarrely captivating. We’ll probably never see him again, but we don’t really care.
