‘America’s Got Talent’ finalist spotlight: Grace VanderWaal
While singers winning “America’s Got Talent” on a fairly regular basis, there is one fact that is not brought up enough: Bianca Ryan was the last female winner of the show. That was all the way back in season 1. Could Grace VanderWaal be the person to change that on this week’s upcoming female? As we’re about to explain in the latest edition of our finalist spotlight below, she’s got a very good chance.
Path so far – She started as a favorite from her first audition, where she got Howie Mandel’s Golden Buzzer. She didn’t perform again until the live shows, but has emerged from both without needing any help from either the judges or the Dunkin’ Save. Most notably, she has done all of this without needing to perform a single cover. All of her songs have been of her own creation.
Strengths – Sure, she’s a very good singer for her age, but what separates her from the other token young singers is that she can perform on the ukulele songs that she created. She’s got an air of authenticity, and seems to legitimately love being up there. If she is nervous, she doesn’t have that look in her eyes of “I really gotta impress everybody.” She would probably be doing this even if she wasn’t on “America’s Got Talent.”
Weaknesses – Is she almost too much of a favorite? There is such a thing as being so popular that some of your fans may forget to vote, and that could happen here given that she’s arguably been the most popular performer on the internet to date.
Odds of winning – Very high. As of right now, Grace feels like the one winner we’re the most confident in picking. Maybe she has more competition now from Brian Justin Crum than she once did, but some other one-time favorites like Laura Bretan and Tape Face have faded somewhat because of some voting results. We imagine that she’ll reprise her audition song in the finale, and that may be precisely what the doctor ordered to chalk up a win.

She really deserves it, regardless of what some of the haters think. This is a talent show, and while she may not be the most polished out of all of the “professional” performers in the competition, she is definitely the most “talented”. Age aside, she is gutsy and genuine. Brian Justin Crum needed a whole team of people just to help him polish up a cover song. He is already a professional singer that was pitchy and boring until he hits the high notes and screams those. Grace has been doing this pretty much all on her own. Her decisions, choices, arrangements, songs…all come from her. If that isn’t talent, then this show is a waste of time.
