‘Saturday Night Live’ re-watch: Jay Pharoah’s impression master-class during Jonah Hill episode
Tonight, NBC is replaying the “Saturday Night Live” episode from earlier this year that featured none other than Jonah Hill as a host, and while we do typically talk about memorable sketches when we do these re-watch articles, it doesn’t feel right here for a couple of different reasons:
1. This episode was one of the worst ones of this past season. While it was not awful on the level of Donald Trump’s show, at the same exact time it never made us laugh longer than just a couple of seconds here and there.
2. We’ve got something a little more interesting to discuss than strictly one of the sketches featuring Hill.
We do of course wonder where it was along the timeline, either before or after the season, that Jay Pharoah realized that he would not be coming back for season 42. His exit hasn’t been publicized in the same way as Taran Killam’s, and that is in many ways a shame since it minimizes some of the talent that he has. You have a prime example for it below, which is a brilliant showcase of just about every great impression that Pharoah can do of various comedians. We said a number of times while he was on the show that Pharoah was one of the strongest impressionists in the series’ history, and we do like to think of this as some further proof of that very thing.
We are going to miss having Jay on the show next season, and we wish he got a chance to do more of these “Weekend Update” bits during his time there. Hopefully, he will get a chance to turn up at some point in order to say a proper goodbye.
