‘Poldark’ season 2: Aidan Turner on Ross’ romantic situation
When “Poldark” season 2 premieres next month, the title character will be finding himself in a rather enormous pickle. Not only will Ross be struggling still with his arrest and the latest tragedy that has befallen him, but there is a complicated romantic web forming involving himself, Demelza, and Elizabeth. It’s a former love meeting a newer one, and then the crumbling potentially of the two when certain decisions are made. As likable as he may be as a hero at times, this situation shows off precisely what some of his flaws are. He dwells at times on the past, and he acts sometimes in the moment out of emotion. This puts his marriage into jeopardy, and we’ll see where things go over the course of the second season.
In describing this situation further to the BBC in a new interview, star Aidan Turner does his best to break it down:
“Ross’s relationship with Demelza suffers at the hand of his relationship with Elizabeth this series. It is hard to know why he can’t just let Elizabeth go, but when you idealise someone for so long which he did when he was away at war it is hard to turn off those feelings.
“It was only through falling in love with Demelza and beginning this new life that he was initially able to deal with the marriage of Elizabeth to his cousin Francis. Ross also feels under a burden of obligation to Elizabeth to support her financially after Francis is gone, and to look after Geoffrey Charles, and as a result of this he gets slightly confused emotionally over where he lies with Elizabeth. His own marriage isn’t going so well and he makes a big mistake that nearly destroys his relationship with Demelza.”
There is obviously a lot of time left, and also a lot of room, for things to change, shape, and grow. Ultimately, though, the ball could be firmly in Ross’ court as to whether or not that happens, and whether or not he’s willing to make the choices that allow that to happen.
