‘The Walking Dead’ season 7: Jeffrey Dean Morgan on Negan cliffhanger
Season 6 of “The Walking Dead” is coming to AMC in October, and with it of course will come drama and the big reveal as to who Negan murdered brutally with that bat. It’s an exciting reveal, but at the same time it is one that has come with plenty of controversy.
What may surprise everyone is that Jeffrey Dean Morgan didn’t even know who he was killing at the time he first filmed the infamous scenes at the end of last season, and he didn’t learn precisely what was happening until he got back to work this summer. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, he made it all the clearer just what sort of emotional process it was for him to figure this out — and the toll it may have taken on some of the other performers who have been there a long time:
“… It’s a heavy deal. It was heavy when we shot it last year and it’s only gotten more intense this year, I think. That first episode back was crazy. It was just crazy. What you’re asking of these actors to put it on the line like they do, and then this scene in particular, especially if they had the summer to dwell on it, it’s a lot. Then I go blowing in like a hurricane, just dance around on my tiptoes swinging Lucille around — it was 10 days of hell, I believe, for everyone involved. Hard work, but it went well beyond that. I mean, you’ve been around, you see these relationships that these guys all have with each other as well as the crew, and everyone is so invested and so passionate. And that ending — or this beginning, I should say — is jarring.”
Obviously, at some point someone will go early on next season, and then the show will press on to other matters. Just don’t assume that Negan will quiet down after this kill; he’s going to be the show’s primary villain for some time, and he’s got enough resources and people to create a stranglehold on Rick and company. Here’s to see precisely how long it lasts.
