Nickelodeon greenlights ‘Rocko’s Modern Life’ TV movie

Rocko's -

Clearly, the age of Nickelodeon nostalgia is very much upon us. How else do you describe that we have “Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie” in development, and now also an hour-long TV movie based on “Rocko’s Modern Life”?

The latter is certainly not something that we saw coming in a million years, mostly because this series, about a wallaby and his wacky world, was always one of the edgier Nicktoons. While not on the level of a “Ren & Stimpy,” it did pack more of a punch than either “Doug” or “Rugrats.” We certainly know that there are many elements of the show (including the name of a certain chicken establishment) that probably would not fly in a 2016 environment. It’s crazy looking back that some of this stuff got on the air.

Still, “Rocko’s Modern Life” was a really fun and off-the-wall cartoon during its run on TV, and we are very much pleased to see that original creator Joe Murray is on board once again. In a statement per Entertainment Weekly, he had the following to say:

“I’m very happy to be rejoining Rocko and my friends from O-Town again … What I have found by bringing these characters back is that it’s not so much about nostalgia, but a sense that they still feel relevant and fresh to me, and after 20 years, they can’t wait to comment on modern life in the 21st century. They still have a lot to say.”

We do anticipate Rocko and company having a little bit more of an evolution than “Hey Arnold!” will, given that we always felt that the latter show was a little bit more timeless in its approach.
