‘Ballers’ season 2, episode 4 review: Digging up dirt; sinking in swamps
“Ballers” season 2 sometimes has so much going on, especially for a comedy, that it often struggles to keep itself together. There were a few moments that this happened tonight, given that we had everything from Ricky’s family time to Charles getting cut to Tracy getting a new job opportunity to Spencer versus Andre to Jason trying to recruit someone new to the theme in Travis.
In some ways, the Travis stuff was the most predictable: He’s a hot-shot young guy who likes to punk around with people, and that is precisely what he did with Jason here as he left him out in the middle of the swamp. Yet, Travis appreciated the fact that Jason came back and was angry, and didn’t need to just be hauled out of there via helicopter. Apparently, there is something of value to coming out into the swamp and proving yourself.
The importance of what is going on with Spencer and Andre also has to be noted, mostly because of all of the work that the former put in with Terrell Suggs, and the revenge Andre is going for now by taking his clients. He had Joe try to dig up some dirt on the guy, but here’s the problem: Andre can probably dig up way more dirt on them. There has to be another way to go after him, right?
In general, this episode provided us with a few laughs here and there, mostly notably Spencer shooting Reggie with a paintball gun after it came through that the Cowboys weren’t going to kick Vernon to the curb. In general, though, this was a standard “Ballers” episode in terms of content and comedy. We just wish that the show could find that extra gear, focus in, and give us even more depth into these characters. We almost wish the show was an hour because of it. Grade: B.
