TV Quick Hits: Jimmy Fallon hosting Golden Globes; ‘Aquarius’ renewal odds; ‘Cruel Intentions’ update

Jimmy Fallon to host Golden Globes – Let’s start with what was to us the big surprise of NBC’s TCA panel this morning: The decision to hire the popular “Tonight Show” host for the emcee job at the movie / TV hybrid show airing early next year. This is about as far from the acerbic Ricky Gervais as you can get, given that Fallon from our vantage point is a stronger sketch comic than a stand-up and the Globes typically don’t leave a whole lot of room open for extended pre-tapes.

In a statement, network head Robert Greenblatt made it clear that he feels as though Jimmy is perfect for the job:

“We’re thrilled to announce Jimmy as host of The 74th Annual Golden Globes … This is the most spontaneous and uninhibited award show on television, and Jimmy’s playful, disarming comedic brilliance makes him the ideal host to enhance and elevate the sense of fun and irreverence that’s made the Golden Globes one of the premier events of the entire broadcast year.”

As for some other news from TCA today…

“Aquarius” in trouble – While not formally canceled, entertainment president Jennifer Salke labeled the show’s renewal chances as “tough” during the event today — which isn’t exactly the sort of thing that inspires confidence in a renewal. The series was recently moved to Saturday nights for the second straight season.

What could happen with “Cruel Intentions” – While the revival with Sarah Michelle Gellar was not picked up for the 2016-17 season, NBC insisted that they still had plans for it. Salke didn’t commit to anything today, but said that they remain invested in finding the right home for the network, and that it could include a streaming home.
