‘Suits’ season 6, episode 1 review: Mike’s struggle goes beyond prison

We have to give it to creator Aaron Korsh and the writers of “Suits“: Even when things get rough, they manage to still squeeze in there a story about Louis Litt and mud that will probably go down in show history for some time.

There was some really great comedy within the empty officers of Pearson Specter Litt in the premiere, which really did have to carry that candle thanks to Mike Ross’ super-serious situation behind bars. Sometime, we still got that even with many former clients filing a class-action lawsuit against them. The team had to admit to their total earnings in order to figure out their next moves, all in the midst of a Chinese food haze.

Things eventually did get serious for Pearson Specter Litt courtesy of a hack; “Mr. Robot” crossover, anyone? Louis, Harvey, and Jessica had to mitigate that and figure out how they want to press on, with the help of one of the few employees they had left beyond the group of familiar faces: A guy in IT. Kudos to Donna in here, as well, who pressed Harvey to stay put in order to be a united front.

Mike’s prison woes – For Mike, he faced a harsh reality on his first night. Rachel was unable to speak to him, and no one was particularly sympathetic to his plight other than Frank Gallo … at least seemingly. Mike’s cellmate got to know him, and then offered him a chance to text his fiancee.

Yet, “Suits” would not be “Suits” without a drastic twist. It turns out that Frank was actually someone who Harvey Specter had put behind bars, and he switched rooms to dupe Mike and get precisely what he wanted from him: Power. Maybe the twist came a little too quick for our taste, but we suppose it had to given he couldn’t stay there forever.

As a whole, we’d say this premiere came out, fired on all cylinders, and was incredibly entertaining. Even when it was sad (see, the end), it didn’t change our level of attachment to the story. Grade: A-.
