‘America’s Got Talent’ video: Dorothy Williams on Nick Cannon’s golden buzzer
While it would be understandable if you were to quibble with Nick Cannon’s golden buzzer choice on “America’s Got Talent,” you gotta feel it’s a good story, right? One of the reasons Cannon pressed it for 90-year old dancer Dorothy Williams was to “make her a star,” and that happened. Her audition has been watched more than four million times on various platforms.
In the video below, you can see Williams discuss precisely what it was like for her to get that golden buzzer press, her expectations going into the show (they weren’t that ambitious), and a little bit more of her backstory. There’s no doubting that she is an interesting contestant this season. Also, it is nice to see someone living in Hawaii getting a little bit of representation.
Does Dorothy have a genuine shot in the live shows? That’s a difficult question to pin down, since it’s all based on circumstance. If she is labeled a throwaway act during one of live shows and performs in the first hour, she’ll most-likely be forgotten. Yet, if she gets primo treatment and an inspirational pre-performance package, her story could win people over. What she does is inspiring; there’s no doubting that from our vantage point.
If you missed it, the auditions portion of the competition is now over. Starting Tuesday, the Judge Cuts round will be here, and will feature performers who advanced to the next round, but were not so lucky to receive golden buzzers. They will be judged by a panel of five, including a guest judge. Those guests will come armed with golden buzzers of their own!
