‘Empire’ season 3 spoilers: What’s next between Lucious, Tariq?

The upcoming third season of “Empire” is going to inevitably have a lot of different things going on (what did you expect?), but front and center for one particular storyline is going to be Lucious having to take on someone in Tariq looking to make an example of him for a variety of different reasons.

For those of you who have seen this play out so far, it’s easy to understand why he’d want to take him down — but we think the comment below from executive producer Ilene Chaiken (per TVLine) offers up some further insight:

“Tariq is very motivated, and he has a very personal grievance against Lucious. He’s not just a fed who wants to make his bones taking down Lucious Lyon — he’s Lucious’ half-brother … We’ll peel away layers of his story and learn why he’s coming so hard after Lucious. Hopefully, the last scene of the [Season 2] finale gave you a taste of that — that he has a real bone to pick with Lucious.”

Ultimately, here’s to hoping that this will be an exciting, epic cat-and-mouse game that sets the stage for a heck of a lot of other awesome stuff coming up later this fall. We know that in general, there are a few open threads that need to be resolved, and this is not even close to being the biggest one. (We’re of course speaking here more about the big reveal that is going to be taking place regarding Rhonda and Anika based on the events of the finale.)
