‘Gotham’ season 2, episode 19 review: When ghosts (possibly) kill
We have to say that once we got through about the first thirty minutes of Monday night’s new episode of “Gotham,” we got a sense as to what is going to happen in terms of the loss of a big character. Yet, at the same time, it happened in a pretty extraordinary way.
As it turns out, it appears that Captain Nathaniel Barnes could be dead, and if so, was killed at the hands of none other than Theo Galavan 2.0 a.k.a. Azrael, the latest tool as created by Hugo Strange. He gave him the identity of the famed assassin, and from there gave him one simple order: Kill at all costs none other than Detective Jim Gordon. In turn, Barnes helped to team up with Gordon, and it led to a fierce showdown at the GCPD. Galavan stabbed Barnes with the end of his broken blade, and the one hope that we have is that we didn’t see the Captain die onscreen. Plus, why would this show want to get rid of Michael Chiklis when he’s so freakin’ amazing? He hasn’t had enough to do most of this season.
Azrael’s mission is more important than ever now that Gordon has figured out Hugo Strange’s real involvement, and intends to put a stop to it. The problem Strange faces now is that the walls are really closing in on him. Ed Nygma has made a few discoveries, and to go along with that we’ve also had a chance to see Oswald prepare more of his own move. He’s familiar with Strange now in his own way, and the same goes for Barbara Kean.
Sure, this episode was heavy-handed with Batman references, especially Bruce when Azrael was running around with a cape. Yet, at the same time there was something amazing about the introduction to this villain and some of the epic fight scenes. It sets the stage certainly for a chaotic new episode next week. Grade: B+.
