‘Britain’s Got Talent’ contestant Jasmine Elcock subject to complaints; why?
In what has to be one of the least-surprising news items of the day, we’re now hearing about some complaints from “Britain’s Got Talent” fans, who are complaining in turn that the “fix” is in for contestant Jasmine Elcock. The young singer got the Golden Buzzer of show hosts Ant and Dec, and is going to be performing in the live final.
So what’s the issue? Some people are apparently upset that she performed in a West End version of “Annie.” The funniest part of this to us is that they’re acting as though this is a surprise! The teenager’s theater background was alluded to on the show itself, and we don’t really know what the public wants anymore when it comes to “undiscovered” talent.
Here is what we think is the reality in 2016. If you were to take away people with prior experience / international talent / everything else that “BGT” fans commonly complain about, these said complainers would be upset over how poor most of the talent is. There are some talented people left in the country, but the pool of undiscovered acts is so much smaller than it used to be. Diamonds in the rough like a Susan Boyle are few and far between, and we don’t want to see a show of good-but-not-great acts competing. You’d also lose a lot of your magic / danger / acrobat acts who come on from other parts of the world.
In a statement (per The Huffington Post), a rep for the show basically reiterated much of what we’ve said here:
“Britain’s Got Talent is open to anyone irrespective of their past experience and all acts are auditioned on merit on the day.”
