White House Correspondents Dinner 2016: President Obama skewers Donald Trump, talks Hillary Clinton

C-SPAN -

The White House Correspondents Dinner is here! Technically, it has been going on for a matter of several hours, but there is one part of it that we care about it more so than anything else: President Obama giving his big speech. This is one of the few times in which he is able to be a comedian more so than a politician, and he’s been especially funny in this over the years.

Given that this is the last time he will get to be a part of this ceremony, we expect the gloves to come off and for him to be a little more biting than usual.

One of the first things that he did was joke that the end of the republic was near, and that this could be “the last White House Correspondents Dinner.” From there, he made some jokes about Goldman Sachs, Hillary Clinton being for sure the next President, and how much he has changed over the course of eight years. Also, he compared locking some Congress members up by barring the doors to have a confirmation hearing for Merrick Garland to the Red Wedding.

Interestingly, he was able to mock Donald Trump and Ted Cruz at first without even saying their names; instead, he just showed their pictures. The biggest thing that Obama skewered him on was how much he claims to be worth. From there, he attacked the media for their mass amount of coverage of him. He also went after Bernie Sanders and his appeal, and Ted Cruz for not knowing what to call a “basketball net.”

The best part of Obama’s segment was at the very end, where he tried to figure out precisely what he wanted to do next, and that included apparently hanging out with former Speaker John Boehner. This was a great outing for Obama; it was funny, silly, but also fitting of his role as President.
