‘Criminal Minds’ season 11, episode 19 preview: Paget Brewster’s return and the timing of it all
We’re sure that the producers of “Criminal Minds” likely found themselves with quite the dilemma going into Wednesday night’s new episode of the show. Given that they just had an emotional send-off to Shemar Moore’s character of Derek Morgan, it’s not exactly easy to keep the excitement level up.
Luckily, we do think that executive producer Erica Messer and her team thought of the smartest thing that they possibly could in bringing back fan favorite Paget Brewster’s Emily Prentiss for “Tribute” as a way to at least given fans some nostalgia. You may be sad over Morgan, but this is a nice little not to the fact that with some actors, they are more than happy to return to the show even after their original exit. Shemar has already said himself that he would be thrilled to come back in the right situation, and this is more evidence of that very thing.
Within the show, Messer tells TVLine that in many ways, bringing Prentiss back now enables the team to talk about Morgan’s exit in a way that gives them more perspective than they would have otherwise:
“She’s sort of delicate about it at first, but then it becomes the ‘elephant in the room’ that they talk about.’ … She can look at it from what Morgan must be feeling right now, because she was once Morgan. She decided to walk away, so she knows what that is. We tried to bring all of that to life.”
Probably the thing that we’re the most happy about right now is simply that the show is planning to keep Morgan as a subject of conversation, and they’re not just abandoning him for the sake of syndication or not wanting to remind fans of unhappy memories. He was an important cog in the show and is being treated as such. Kudos to the writers.
