‘Game of Thrones’ season 6 will have vast differences from the books

LogoIf you think back to the first season of “Game of Thrones” on HBO, the show really lined up pretty accurately with the George R.R. Martin source material. However, there were a few differences, and over time those differences led to even more differences. It’s a butterfly effect where if you change a few things, it ends up changing a pretty large percentage of the story.

Maybe this is, in part, what co-showrunner David Benioff is talking about when he tells Entertainment Weekly that really, what you see on season 6 this spring is not going to be even close to an accurate depiction of what happens in the books:

“People are talking about whether the books are going to be spoiled – and it’s really not true … So much of what we’re doing diverges from the books at this point. And while there are certain key elements that will be the same, we’re not going to talk so much about that – and I don’t think George is either. People are going to be very surprised when they read the books after the show. They’re quite divergent in so many respects for the remainder of the show.”

The words “remainder of the show” are clear here, since that is meant to serve as a very accurate recognition of the fact that all of the upcoming episodes are going to continue to be different. It’s going to be hard for the series to reverse course at this point and suddenly appear more like the books, especially when there are only two books left and presumably three seasons.

Season 6 premieres on April 24, and we’ll get a good idea then as to precisely how different they are.
