‘Game of Thrones’ season 6 trailer breaks HBO record, almost the internet
Typically with most shows, they tend to top out when it comes to their audience at around season 4 or 5. Eventually, there does come a tipping point where it is no longer easy for new viewers to catch up, and some previous devotees start to tune out.
However, that has not happened quite yet with HBO’s “Game of Thrones.” According to Entertainment Weekly, the 30 million views that the season 6 trailer (see more about that here) has generated in the past 24 hours is a new record for the network, surpassing the 27 million who caught the trailer for season 5 online. This is even more surprising to us given that HBO handed this trailer a “red band” label, which could have caused some people out there to be a little wary of watching it while at work.
As for whether or not this record means that the show itself will set viewership records for its premiere on April 24, we don’t think that there is necessarily a direct correlation. While getting all of these viewers definitely does not hurt, you do have to remember here that this is a show that is heavily pirated and watched all over the world. Many of the people who check out the series and have watched this trailer are not doing so in America.
Given that the show is moving ahead of the George R.R. Martin source material in many regards, we do for sure think that we’re going to see even more interest from diehard book fans than usual (if that it is even possible).
