‘House of Cards’ season 5: Series vets named new showrunners

While the news regarding a “House of Cards” season 5 renewal was great when it was first announced, there was somewhat of an asterisk attached to it: Creator Beau Willimon was leaving his position as primary showrunner. Anytime that you hear this sort of news, the reaction can be somewhat distressing. After all, this leads to some fears that perhaps a show has changed significantly, and the new showrunners will just not be able to understand / connect to the original vision.

Luckily, we don’t get many signs at the moment that this is going to be what is happening here. After all, it appears as though the latest people hired by Netflix know the series rather well! In a statement on Friday, it was revealed that longtime series writers Melissa James Gibson and Frank Pugliese have been tapped to replace Willimon as the showrunners for the series, and Kevin Spacey had the following to say:

“I welcome Frank and Melissa in their new roles on House of Cards and look forward to collaborating with them and our creative team on Season Five.”

Meanwhile, Gibson and Pugliese also stated the following:

“We and the rest of the House of Cards writers look forward to the next chapter of the reign of Underwood.”

If there are any creative stumbles coming up in the future of “House of Cards,” we don’t think that it will have anything to do with the change-up at the top. Instead, we’d be a little more concerned over the longevity of the series, and the fear that sooner or later, a show hits a tipping point and just can’t retain quality anymore.
