NBC’s ‘Cruel Intentions’ pilot will feature Sarah Michelle Gellar

NBCNBC just got their first ace in the hole for their upcoming pilot “Cruel Intentions,” meant to follow the famed feature film of the same name: Sarah Michelle Gellar is on board. It was clear for some time that the producers were heavily pursuing the former “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” star (who worked on the movie alongside Reese Witherspoon and others), and it’s nice to have confirmation now that it all worked out.

Gellar confirmed the news of her joining the show on Instagram, where she posted a photo with the following caption:

“#throwbackthursday (a bit early in Los Angeles) this picture was taken on the eve of production on the original #cruelintentions. Its me #rogerkumble (director) and #nealmoritz (exec producer) and the other is a picture of us now on the eve of production on the new #cruelintentions. That’s right “everybody loves me, and I intend to keep it that way” #kathrynmerteuil is back!!! I am happy to say that I will be joining them (and @nbctv ) on the new #Crueltv”

This casting could strongly help NBC consider giving a series order to the continuation, though we’re sure getting some other stars of the film to cameo would help. Hopefully, this will be a chance for Gellar to find a new project that ultimately sticks around longer than a season. “Ringer” was an ambitious show, but it was clear for a long time that it was not exactly right for the CW audience and would have fared a little bit better elsewhere. Meanwhile, “The Crazy Ones” tried to be a single-camera comedy on a network in CBS that doesn’t tend to appreciate them enough.

In the end, we’ll probably get an answer on “Cruel Intentions” come the upfronts in May.
