‘Better Call Saul’ season 2 premieres to one of its lowest ratings yet

Are people just not watching “Better Call Saul” anymore, or is this a situation where more people are waiting for Netflix to air the show or to check it out on their DVR? All our possibilities, but in the end we’re most surprised by some of the ratings that we saw for the show Monday night.

The season 2 premiere posted just a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic, and while that was strong enough to make it the #1 scripted cable program on the night, it is tied for the show’s lowest-rated episode to date. The “Talking Saul” aftershow drew just a 0.3 rating, which really does not give us a whole lot of confidence in its future beyond the one show that they have already scheduled here for the finale.

Were the Grammys a huge factor this year? We’re sure that they hurt “Saul” a little bit, but at the same time also don’t see there being an enormous crossover between the two.

Ultimately, it is fair to say that these premiere numbers are very misleading in painting a picture for the show as a whole, since it’s inevitable that things will change significantly when you start to see live+3 data come in. More and more people are recording shows these days, especially on cable where networks like FX have reported that their ratings for many shows have doubled in the demo within three days from the original airing.

For us, the great news right now is that we don’t envision “Better Call Saul” being in any eminent danger, and the show got off to a very entertaining start Monday night with Jimmy McGill continuing on his journey that will lead to him becoming one of the sleaziest attorneys known to the state of New Mexico. Of course, this is eventually also going to lead to him becoming Cinnabon employee Gene in the future.
