‘Suits’ season 5, episode 14 review: Mike, Harvey search for a safety net

Tonight’s episode of “Suits” was certainly a courtroom calamity, and as painful as it was to watch Mike Ross suffer, we have to admit that this is one of the most compelling hours of television we’ve seen in some time.

After a lengthy series of debates and searching for witnesses, eventually Mike and Harvey did find what seemed to be their ace in the whole: Jimmy, a Harvard law alum who Mike had helped out in the past. Harvey convinced him to take the stand and lie for him, saying that he did attend school with him. This was a win. Unfortunately, there were many other problems that quickly mounted up for Mike and Harvey as they continued their crusade.

The first? That Donna was called to the stand, and really for the first time in quite a long time, we saw her struggle under the weight of the questions being asked of her. She protected herself by pleading the fifth, but this certainly did not help Mike. The same goes for Trevor’s testimony. At the end of the day, Harvey realized that they had to find a way to get the jury to like Mike beyond just a defendant, and the only way to do that would be to have him represent himself … which ironically is what Mike wanted to do in the first place and even had a mock trial with Harvey to make that happen.

Can they switch out lawyers right in the middle of the case? It’s going to be difficult, but these two have another problem now in the form of Louis, who Anita Gibbs could persuade to turn on all of them. She is continuing to put doubt into everyone’s mind, and for the first time in a long time, showing that someone in law enforcement / the legal system that is not on the same side as our main characters on a show can be something other than a bumbling idiot. She’s brilliant, and that’s terrible news for Mike and company. There is a long road ahead, and as a viewer we couldn’t be more thrilled. Grade: A.
