‘Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen’ episode 8: Phillip Frankland Lee, Jason Stratton square off
We were very curious to see how this latest edition of “Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen” panned out, mostly because this was really the first showdown of the season between two people who were not exactly on the same page for much of the time they were together. Jason Stratton had previous went at Phillip Frankland Lee for some of his comments in the competition, and after Phillip’s elimination in Restaurant Wars, he an opportunity here for redemption.
The entire theme of this particular challenge was humorous in its own way, mostly in that it was something designed so that Phillip couldn’t talk his way out of why he wasn’t doing well. He got to pick the protein (sweetbreads) and also the time in which the two had a chance to cook (20 minutes). This was an entire hour catered to satisfy his every whim.
Did this actually work out for him as a winner? As it turns out, not so much. He still lost to Jeremy after Tom Colicchio was critical of some of his food, which led to him leaving by saying that ultimately, he cannot convince the judges to like his food. We probably liked Phillip more than some people out there, but some self-reflection would go a long way for him. He’s got to realize that there are some flaws in his food, and that it’s okay and there’s always room to grow as a chef. We think watching this back will ultimately probably be rather good for him to start to put some perspective on the whole experience.
As for Jason, he lives to fight on one more week.
