2016 Super Bowl Commercials: Steve Harvey mocks Miss Universe controversy for T-Mobile
Sure, it’s not the funniest ad we’ve ever seen, but as we say below, this is still brilliant for the mobile provider to come in and jump on what is currently in the headlines.
What works – Getting Harvey is the only reason this is worth a laugh at all. He plays up the controversy like nobody’s business at this point; we know he felt bad about it at first, but we’re starting to think that this is one of the best things that could’ve ever happened to him. Otherwise, he’s known mostly for his gigs on daytime TV.
What doesn’t – We’re really not sure at this point how many viewers care about the finer details when it comes to Verizon vs. T-Mobile service … or at least we don’t. We just want a phone company that has good data, a decent price, and good service. It was also a stretch to bring in Harvey for this, but T-Mobile probably doesn’t think that matters much.
Grade – B. We’re not sure much is here beyond Harvey, but we’re not sure T-Mobile cares. This is an easy way to get press.
