2016 Super Bowl commercials: Budweiser recruits Helen Mirren for anti-drunk driving ad

Budweiser -It’s Super Bowl Sunday, and here at CarterMatt that means one thing above all else: A chance to review all of the commercials from the game! Well, at least most of them. We’re not going to waste our time on the ads that are mundane and you’re going to tune out even when they are on TV.

So for our first in our ongoing series today (watch other commercials / see reviews here), we’re talking all about Budweiser and their new campaign.

The idea – Helen Mirren, legendary movie star, insults people who drink and drive before urging people who consume to care about themselves and those around them.

What works – Mirren. She’s known for having a lot of sass, and she is the perfect person for Budweiser to use for this ad. It’s very smart. She advertises their product and brings dignity to it, while at the same time making it clear that it is something to be used responsibly.

What doesn’t – We really want a burger after looking at this for the whole ad, and we’re not sure if that is the point. Shouldn’t we want to have Budweiser in a responsible fashion? The commercial also makes it clear that there is a hashtag behind the campaign, but this is not something that is really mentioned enough by Mirren itself. The branding across all channels could have been better.

Overall Grade – B+. It’s a solid effort from a company who is known for doing very good commercials. We’re not sure that we are going to remember it in a few years’ time, but it’s one of the best beer ads solely for the purpose of promoting responsibility that we’ve seen.
