‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 7, episode 11 preview: Paul Wesley directs; Michael Trevino returns

tvd -Tonight, “The Vampire Diaries” gave us what may very well be their version of “Groundhog Day” in “Hell in Other People,” an installment that showed us repeatedly the sort of turmoil that comes with being stuck inside the head of Damon Salvatore. Going through the same events time and time again at times forced him to be his worst self, but as viewers we were thoroughly entertained by almost all of it.

Next week, the show is giving us “Things We Lost in the Fire,” an episode directly by Paul Wesley that will also feature the return of Michael Trevino for the first time since showing up briefly earlier this season. This time around, though, he is around in the present to help prepare Alaric for fatherhood. The synopsis below offers up a few more details as to what you can expect:

“With the traumatic effects of the Phoenix stone taking a toll on his brother, Stefan (Paul Wesley) attempts to help Damon (Ian Somerhalder) regain his grip on reality, while secretly struggling with his own experience in the stone. Elsewhere, Matt (Zach Roerig) and Bonnie (Kat Graham) deal with the fallout after Julian (guest star Todd Lasance) and his men take over Mystic Falls, leading Matt to spiral out of control and into trouble with an officer named Penny (guest star Ana Nogueira). Meanwhile, Tyler (guest star Michael Trevino) returns to town for Alaric’s (Matt Davis) baby shower and Caroline (Candice King) makes an upsetting discovery involving Alaric and his future plan for the babies.”

For the time being we do remain very much interested in seeing what this story brings to the table, mostly because it’s clear that the show is trying some more interesting, experimental stuff at this point. Maybe they’re feeling looser with the show’s future so uncertain, but we like much of what they’re trying.
