‘Beyond the Tank’ review: Wicked Good Cupcakes, Grill Charms, Squatty Potty, Tower Paddle Boards

Beyond the Tank -Beyond the Tank” on Thursday night proved itself yet again to be a series of lengthy “Shark Tank” updates, but we’re going to give the show a little bit of credit for trying to at least do something more than give us generic segments on how business are doing. There was some interesting information in here!

Tower Paddle Boards – This is probably one of the most positive segments that a show has received, but there wasn’t really anything negative to show in here! Instead of drama, what we found fascinating here was seeing Mark Cuban lend a helping hand to encourage brand-building versus just creating new extensions and hoping people identify them as a brand. Fascinating stuff from top to bottom, and perhaps the most fascinating was that those guys from Amazon got aboard the paddle boards in what appeared to be Seattle! We’re far too cowardly for that.

Squatty Potty – The thing here is that Squatty Potty was one of the few businesses from “Shark Tank” we were actually familiar with before they arrived on the show, and we knew they were going to be a smash hit. Still, they’ve managed to surpass expectations for so many reasons, with one of the biggest ones being their uniqueness in a market that is totally under-served. We like the video strategy since they know how to educate better than anyone. Also, Lori Greiner really is the right Shark for them.

Grill Charms – Sometimes, you gotta know when to walk away. It’s nice to see that a business from season 1 is still out there, even if it is now licensed and being sold by a larger company after it became too much to handle. We’d consider it a success story still, and what we really liked about this segment is that it showed that there is a different path to leading a happy life once the show was over.

Wicked Good Cupcakes – The branding-cookie idea is really quite phenomenal no matter how you look at it. Sure, the cake mix was every bit the mess that Kevin O’Leary suggested, but after Kevin O’Leary met with the ladies behind this company it was clear it would be fine. This was probably the dullest segment of the night since it was so easy to predict the end result … but it also made us the hungriest.
