‘American Crime Story’: Why John Travolta decided to play Robert Shapiro
On Tuesday night, “American Crime Story: The People v. OJ Simpson” is going to launch on FX, and we could not be more pumped for what it has to offer. This could end up being one of the most-notable shows from the first half of this year, and we could also end up seeing it in awards-show discussion when the Emmys roll around this summer.
There are a wide array of notable cast members on the show, whether you are talking about David Schwimmer, Sarah Paulson, or Cuba Gooding Jr. as Simpson himself. However, one that may stand out above all others is John Travolta in the role of Robert Shapiro. It has been decades since the actor did a TV role, and it was something he decided to do because of the interest that the people involved in the show had in him, in addition to the quality of the work. Here is what he had to say on the subject to Entertainment Weekly:
“I had been approached a number of times [to do TV] … I spent so many years doing film. I admired television and its evolution. I was in love with Mad Men and a couple of other series. I thought they were doing the quality of good film, of a great feature film. I decided it was worth a gander to at least hear what [executive producers] Ryan Murphy and Nina Jacobson had to say about it.”
Do we think that Travolta will do a fantastic job? Absolutely, mostly because he is getting a chance to take on one of the meatiest roles he’s had in some time. We are also expecting great things from Gooding, and Murphy was smart to also include one of his own favorite collaborators in Paulson into the mix since she always shines on screen.

The trouble is that many of us lived through that trial and don’t care to re-live it. We know OJ was guilty. While it is exciting to have John back on TV and drawing attention back to his acting rather than his personal life, he might have done better to choose a different movie. Many people I know are simply not going to watch it. Why? Been there, done that. Watched it take 13 years for OJ to come to any kind of justice for any of his actions. Watching our youth deteriorate under the culture of the awful family (Kardashians) that he let loose on the world. Watched him also ruin entertainment by ushering in the era of reality TV. JUST. NOT. INTERESTED!
