‘Beyond the Tank’ review: Bottle Breacher, Cousins Maine Lobster, and Mo’s Bows
The ratings for “Beyond the Tank” have hardly been out of the park this season, and after watching the latest episode on Thursday night, it’s fairly easy to understand why: The show’s a little vanilla, save for a few moments that don’t just feel like update packages and commercials for the products featured. This also has to work as entertainment, and it does not always succeed when it comes to that.
Our main issue with the three main segments of the episode is that we’ve seen two of the products so recently on “Shark Tank” itself that we didn’t think we had the capacity to learn anything new.
Cousins Maine Lobster – Given that it was fairly obvious that their restaurant was thriving still online, there wasn’t much drama behind watching this segment. To be fair, it almost surely did not help the cousins that this episode was meant to air during season 1. While seeing Barbara Corcoran angry is always fun, having the big drama be restaurant decor is not great TV. The food looks delicious, and we’d go to eat at the restaurant still (even if we know it would take a lot of pricey lobster to fill us up). The main regret here is merely from a TV standpoint.
Mo’s Bows – The best segment of the night, which is ironic since Mo didn’t get a deal. This was mostly just fascinating in a window into Daymond John’s soul, seeing more of where he grew up and how that has shaped him into being the entrepreneur he is. We haven’t seen Mo venture as far out as he talked about in this segment with his clothing, and we think that’s a good thing. He is still a kid, and he has to have time to do that.
Bottle Breacher – Finally, we conclude with a product whose best moment was when Kevin O’Leary got emotional, mostly because it showed that other side of him. We do think that this brand in particular has done a great job (we doubted it before its first “Shark Tank” experience), but like with the Cousins, the main conflict in this episode was production … something that you knew they’d resolve or their business would be shut down. There wasn’t much to discuss here.
