‘The Big Bang Theory’ may not end after season 10, CBS boss claims

The long-term future of “The Big Bang Theory” is something that is starting to become a fundamental part of the conversation not just at CBS, but also among those who cover the network extensively. Commercially, it is clear that it is the #1 comedy still on television both in terms of total viewers and the 18-49 demographic that advertisers care the most for. Sure, it may also be rather expensive based on the salaries that you’re paying the cast, but there is clearly enough money to go around.

Eventually, the end date of the show will likely be either when the show is just not worth its cost anymore, or when the actors decide that they want to do other things. (As it is, sitcoms are one of the easier jobs that a series regular can have when you look at the schedule.) CBS is at least making it clear for now that they have no plans to end the show. This is what programming head Glenn Geller stated recently while at the TCA Winter Press Tour, which clearly means to us that they’d like to see it go on past season 10. The show was renewed until this point over a year ago.

So when do we imagine that there will be more talks about the end date? Probably over the summer, since we imagine that this is the sort of thing that there will be some sort of firm decision on well before production gets around to the end of the series. With the show being so popular, they will want to ensure that there is a proper series finale.

When looking at this versus some other popular CBS comedies of years past, “Two and a Half Men” lasted all the way to twelve seasons, albeit with many different changes to the cast. Meanwhile, “Everybody Loves Raymond” lasted for nine years before going off the air.
