‘American Idol 15’ review: Harrison Cohen, Brenda K. Starr’s daughter Gianna Isabella audition
Wednesday night’s new episode of “American Idol” brought us more auditions, and to go along with that, there was a familiar face: The daughter of a reasonably-famous person in Brenda K. Starr. Sometimes these descendants-of-famous-people don’t always make it that far.
We’re going to update this review throughout the night, so let’s go ahead and start with the person who is going to generate at least some buzz online.
Gianna Isabella – Okay, so her mom is “I Still Believe” singer Brenda K. Starr, which gives her a little bit of that star power. She looks a lot like her mom did during her heyday. “House of the Rising Sun” is hardly an innovative song choice, but she shows a lot of range and control for someone who is only 15 years old. She could make it pretty far.
Isaac Cole – He looks like a cross between Keith Urban and Justin Bieber. He’s got an okay voice; a little strained, but like Gianna he’s extremely young. He could get better over the course of the season, but we do get a “not ready” vibe from him through this performance. We’re still not sure he makes it to the live rounds.
Sara Sturm – Very bohemian look. Also, we’re glad that there’s a pure pop singer trying out. This season has felt very country, and we never want too much of one thing monopolizing the show. That made season 10 rather tough down the line.
Jenn Blosil – Very ethereal. She’s going for that whole “quirky vibe.” We’re not surprised at all that she lives in Brooklyn, since her personality feels like she could be a character on “Girls.” She went a little too aggressively at one point during “Radioactive,” but she may be the best of the first four singers we’ve seen overall.
Harrison Cohen – his voice is creepy in a good way; some of the eye gestures he’s got going on may be creepy in a creepy way. What we do like is that he’s at least animated and understands that this is a TV show and a recording studio. Do you think he can tell some other people that when they try out?
John Arthur Greene – It’s nice that Fox released a preview of this performance before John auditioned tonight. Why? We didn’t hear his story, since we were totally wrecked after hearing it during the episode. He’s got a great voice and stage presence, and seems to have recovered nicely from that trouble early in life.
