‘Shameless’ renewed for season 7 days after season 6 premiere

Shameless -While at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour on Monday, Showtime chose to waste little time making one thing rather clear: They are in the market for more “Shameless.” The network officially announced that the Emmy Rossum – William H. Macy series has been renewed for a seventh season, which will likely air in early 2017.

Showtime has shown this series, revolving around the incredibly-dysfunctional Gallagher family, a lot of loyalty and support over the years, even in spite of it being perhaps one of their most absurd products and also some internet comments being less-than-kind about the recent direction of the show. Some of the most notable series in the history of the network have gone for eight seasons, whether you look at “Dexter” or “Weeds.” Could “Shameless” do the same? We are certainly not ruling that out at the moment, but given this is TCA, we would not be shocked if they announced soon that it was the final season, either.

The main reason we think that the network enjoys the show so is because it is a consistent ratings performer, it anchors their lineup early in the year (where it has a tendency to be a little bit sparse), and it also manages to stir up conversation. Thanks to it being classified as a comedy, we feel like it also generates a lot of Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for them. The network is always going to be fond of having that sort of thing on its resume.
