‘American Idol’ season 15 video: Watch the full opening sequence now!

For its final season, “American Idol” really does want to remind you of one simple thing: This is a show where dreams can come true. The original premise does still stand in so many ways. You start from relative obscurity, and then you can go on to be a big star.

Is the show the great hotbed of talent it once was? No. As a matter of fact, far from it, but what can they really do about that at this point? There is YouTube, Vine, Instagram, “The Voice,” more record labels, and a dozen or so other ways to become a star that weren’t around when the first season aired a decade and a half ago. While it’s not completely irrelevant, it has now been three seasons since a winner has gone on to do anything even remotely spectacular.

The video below is the opening to season 15 (premiering on January 6), and the focus here for the most part seems to be reminding you of the show’s legacy. It’s almost like the series is practicing some sort of psychology here, and hoping that if they show you an extended series of highlights from the past, you will start to suddenly feel as though someone in the present can also be a star.

In the end, it’s funny, sentimental, and everything in between. We’re going to miss “American Idol” when it is gone, even if for the longest time we have wondered whether or not the show still matters.
