Miss Universe 2015: See Steve Harvey’s gaffe (leading to Pia Wurtzbach win), apology
The Miss Universe Pageant on Sunday night ended up certainly being quite the eventful affair, but probably not in the way that anyone could have predicted.
If you saw one of our previous articles tonight on the subject, you know that Pia Wurtzbach of the Philippines was declared the winner on the night over Ariadna Gutiérrez of Colombia. However, at the same time it was the way in which this happened that caused so much controversy. Host Steve Harvey announced first that Miss Colombia had won the title, only to be told seconds later that it was a mistake, and Miss Philippines actually had the crown. Suffice it to say, this may be one of the most awkward wins of any person in pageant history.
You can see the specific videos of the mistake below courtesy of former Miss Universe Olivia Culpo, while you can also check out Harvey’s apology, which unfortunately also misspells the names of both countries. He probably should have checked that before putting the tweet up. (Update: He’s now deleted it.)
In the end, there’s of course a human part of us that sympathizes with Harvey given that this is the sort of catastrophic mistake that is going to live with him for some time, and he probably just got confused in the moment thanks to all of the pressure that is on him. We all can give him a good ribbing, but we hope people don’t spend their time tonight spewing venom on him for something he clearly didn’t mean to do. After all, isn’t this the season of giving? Kindness can win out!
