‘Homeland’ season 5 finale reaction: Did Quinn live or die?
Sunday night’s season 5 finale of “Homeland” proved to be every bit the emotional gut-punch that you would have expected, and much of it traces back to one event that many of you out there probably still predicted: The death of Peter Quinn. Rupert Friend’s character did not make it out alive, but it came in more of a subdued manner than we expected. After Carrie realized from the doctors that there was no hope for him to regain proper brain function, she decided to pull the plug … or at least we think. Not everything was shown but we can assume enough here, at least so that the show doesn’t pull a “Walking Dead” and he emerges still breathing.
Unfortunately for those hoping for romance between these characters, their legacy is more of ships passing in the night. Dar gave her the note that Quinn wrote last season, and she also learned that he had named her his primary beneficiary. It was a nice button to their relationship and their story; personally, we’re going to miss what Rupert Friend gave to this show. This character became so much more than we ever thought it would.
Elsewhere in the finale, we predictably saw the end of Allison after she was shot down, Saul offered Carrie a new job at the CIA, one that she turned down. She had moved forward, and apparently that also means without Jonas since their relationship is no more after they slept together in the episode. She did also receive one from Otto, and that thread is still hanging in the air.
Of course, Carrie managed to save the day, but did you really think anything else would happen? That is why we have to point more towards the death of Quinn as the more significant event. It’ll define Carrie and possibly change her, and we now have to look ahead to next season.
