‘The Nightly Show’ host Larry Wilmore to be featured at 2016 White House Correspondents Dinner

There are two hosting gigs on television that we consider to be the most challenging of them all: The Academy Awards, and then also the White House Correspondents Dinner. Both are incredibly scrutinized, and in the case of the latter you have to find a way to make a room full of people laugh who are terrified of showing any signs of weakness.

Today, it was announced (via Politico) that the challenge for the 2016 dinner (more than likely taking place this spring) is going to none other than Larry Wilmore. The host of “The Nightly Show” will have to entertain everyone from President Barack Obama (this is his last dinner as President) to other notable dignitaries to also members of the media. Given Wilmore’s passion for brutal honesty and his comedy, we imagine that there are a few people in the audience who will not love some of the truth-bombs that are dropped upon them.

In a statement, the White House Correspondents Association President Carol Lee had the following to say:

“Larry’s edgy, even provocative, brand of humor means he’s certainly up to the task of skewering politicians of all ideological stripes, and we don’t expect the nation’s news media to escape unscathed, either … We are thrilled that Larry has accepted our invitation to be the featured comedian at our annual dinner, which will be the last during the Obama White House.”

Wilmore also said that he is “beyond excited” for the role in a post on Twitter. He follows up recent performers including Cecily Strong and Seth Meyers. He’s far from the first person with Comedy Central ties to perform at the dinner. Stephen Colbert remains notorious for his roasting of the Bush administration so many years ago.
