‘The Walking Dead’ season 6 fall finale ratings down slightly from season 5

For several weeks this season, “The Walking Dead” has enjoyed some generous ratings brought on in part (at least so we feel) by the rampant speculation surrounding Glenn’s fate. So did that continue moving into the finale? Now that Glenn’s been revealed to be alive, let’s just say that the AMC show now needs to figure out how to get more attention from other places.

The fall finale of the series Sunday, which featured the death of Deanna among some other events, ended up drawing as a whole a 7.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic. Is this impressive? Without a doubt, since it is double the rating of many other top-rated shows out there and they would probably beg for something close to it. Still, it is down from the 7.5 rating that the fall finale generated last season, and down from the 7.4 for the series premiere. (Since demo ratings are what really matters to ad-supported networks, this is why we focus on them here.)

So is disappointment over the Glenn reveal the main reason why we are staring this issue in the face? We wouldn’t say that. Instead, we think it is more along the lines of the fact that this is a show in its sixth season at this point, and this is a time where there is some natural viewer fatigue. The fact that it has been somewhat polarizing and slow-moving certainly doesn’t help.

The big test for this show ratings-wise is going to be seeing from here how it fares with the midseason premiere on February 14, and if the hype surrounding Negan, who was teased in Sunday’s episode, will lead to great numbers.
