Crossover November: What if ‘The Good Wife,’ ‘Suits’ season 5 joined forces?

For the next edition of our Crossover November series here at CarterMatt, we’re having a little bit of fun with legal dramas! Yes, the words “fun” and “legal drama” often do not go together, so just ignore that part of the statement for a minute.

Before we get into this article, let’s start with a quick note for those of you out there who haven’t seen these articles before: We’re well aware that a crossover featuring “Suits” and “The Good Wife” will never happen; but what if did? What can be gained from this? Even if there is no crossover, something that is interesting about this series is figuring out what a given show may be missing by focusing on another one. Without further ado, let’s dive in.

The case for a crossover – For “The Good Wife,” it’s great to see how lawyers in another part of the country are operating, and given how much this show loves to throw formidable challenges in Alicia Florrick’s direction, who better to square off against than Harvey Specter? He would be a real test of her ability, and at this point someone like Jessica Pearson could be who she is building towards in terms of success, now that she is starting over to a certain degree in her career. (Both seem rather unlucky in love.)

Also, wouldn’t both shows benefit from Louis Litt and Eli Gold meeting? One thing that “Suits” has struggled with at times is finding someone who is a character with his same sort of magnetism. Eli could be that guy. If nothing else, maybe Mike could hire Alicia over his recent arrest if he feels like Harvey is too close to the situation. We know she’ll fight hard for him!

The case against it – Obviously, there are the logical hurdles. One show is on CBS, while the other is on USA. They’re also produced by separate studios, and you’d have to figure out why lawyers in Chicago matter to lawyers in New York. You’d also have to figure out a way to keep Harvey from cursing as much if the crossover was airing on CBS.

The interesting thing about a crossover between these two shows is that in terms of subject matter, style, and in some ways even tone, it works pretty well. The issue here is coming up with a compelling reason, other than throwing some new challenges some of the characters. We think that Mike could learn someone from a guy who faced some legal challenges in the past in Cary Agos, but maybe that wouldn’t be enough to justify it.
