‘American Horror Story: Hotel’ episode 2 reaction: More on Evan Peters’ Mr. March; also, ratings

Peters -Before we get into some more description on “American Horror Story: Hotel” and one of its most-notorious villains, let’s start things off here with a brief discussion of the ratings. Wednesday night’s new episode was down significantly from the premiere, dropping from a 3.0 in the 18-49 demographic all the way to a 2.2. This is expected given that “Freak Show” did the same thing, and it makes you wonder how FX is able to rope so many people back into a show that they really don’t have any intention to continue watching.

Now, let’s spend a minute discussing Mr. March and what may motivate him. He’s the creator of the Hotel Cortez, he’s incredibly violent, and at the moment he seems like the most terrible person on the season. In speaking on this subject further, executive producer Ryan Murphy had the following to say to Entertainment Weekly:

“He’s evil and he’s twisted. He said some line about that he had everything handed to him. Excess became such a part of his life that he couldn’t feel anything. So in order to feel something he had to push it to an extreme dark place.”

We’re going to get a chance to learn more about this character as the season progresses, especially when it comes to how he will continue to interact with characters in the present. There are some other villains on this season, with Sarah Paulson’s Sally being near the top of the list, but we feel almost like she is more tied to something thematically (i.e. addiction) than anything we are seeing from Mr. March.
