‘Downton Abbey’ season 6, episode 3: Looking immediately forward and far beyond
Sunday night’s new episode of “Downton Abbey” on ITV is going to have a variety of important subjects packed within its hour-long runtime. For one, you are going to see more of Lady Mary’s love life, and how she is starting to come closer to making some very crucial decisions all about what she wants out of her future. (Warning: Spoilers ahead for Americans!)
To go along with that, though, there is also a key wedding between Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes, which is that moment of happiness for everyone who has loved these characters for so long. That may be the closest thing that we have to true evidence that despite all of the hardship, this may be a show that is legitimately trying to give its fans some sort of a happy ending … if the series finale is the ending at all.
While nothing has been confirmed just yet, show creator / writer Julian Fellowes is doing almost nothing to cool the talk about there being a movie on Sunday based off of the show. Speaking in a new interview on “Good Morning Britain,” he made it clear that it would “be fun” to potentially revisit the series in a different sort of format. (Personally, we still do not love the idea, mostly because we are a believer in keeping things restricted to a single form.)
Fellowes also reflected on what it was like writing and filming the end of the series, which has at this point encompassed a large percentage of his life:
“As with almost everything in life, you have mixed feelings about it … We started out to make nice period drama, then this great whirlwind carried us away.
“We had young actors that were barely known and now they are famous from Bangkok to Rome.”
Many of these actors would be difficult to eventually snag for a movie role. We’re sure that they would be somewhat interested in revisiting the project, but the concern would be more about getting the schedules to lineup for everyone, given how almost every person will be in a new place in their career.
