‘Downton Abbey’ season 6, episode 1: No more episodes coming for Hugh Bonneville, cast next year
Before we get to viewing and celebrating “Downton Abbey” this season, we do have to go ahead and squelch any rumors that are still floating around out there about the ITV series having any potential life beyond this year. For a time, there were still some rumors floating around out there that maybe the show could do something more; as a matter of fact, there were even some interview questions that were taken incredibly far out of context that probably further misinformed many.
Speaking to the Daily Mail leading into Sunday’s premiere, executive producer Gareth Neame confirmed once again that there is no season 7 coming; ultimately, doing one with the current cast is impossible given that many actors have already moved on. Still, there is a chance that Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, or anyone else whose characters make it through the final season could come back for a movie at some point in the future, though it does not seem to be anytime soon:
‘Yeah, there is the possibility of a film. It is something we’re very open to and we’re in very, very early stages, so nothing concrete.”
We know tht Neame’s fellow executive producer and series writer Julian Fellowes has made features before, so we figure that there may still be a hunger or a temptation to go back into that still. Personally, we would much prefer if he just were to forget about those a little bit and move on to the next thing. If the show started on TV, we’d like to see it end there, as well. We just don’t like the assumption that feature films are somehow more important than movies, and maybe that is the only way to reunite the cast. (A TV movie, meanwhile, is something we could get behind.)
