NBC’s ‘The Voice’ video: Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani, Pharrell perform each other’s songs
At this point, it has become a tradition on “The Voice” for there to be some sort of Frankenstein musical number with all of the coaches singing different parts. Sometimes, this really doesn’t sound great since you’ve got four people from different backgrounds all trying to harmonize together without a whole lot of preparation.
Someone thankfully came up with a better idea for season 9: Getting each one of the coaches to sing another coach’s song, and then have them come together briefly at the end. As you’ll see in the video below, it’s not perfect; however, it is a better showcase of individual talent.
Gwen Stefani – Gwen clearly has the hardest challenge of all here performing Blake’s “Neon Light,” mostly because it is so far different from what she typically does. Still, she puts a decent country twang on it, and performs it in a way that is different from the original.
Blake Shelton – Blake’s version of “Don’t Speak” starts out a little bit hokey, but when he gets into that chorus you can actually start to see him attach to the song, almost like a symbiote in the “Spider-Man” universe. Also, he hits a really nice note. We almost wish that Blake could just bring out a guitar and do an acoustic version of it.
Pharrell Williams and Adam Levine – While Pharrell takes on “Sugar” and Adam does a little bit of “Get Lucky,” the funny thing here is that these two guys actually sound fairly similar to each other already. That’s why we grouped them together. They have the best performance of the coaches here, but they don’t really have to push themselves too far here when you consider that they are pretty firmly still in their comfort zones.
