‘Gotham’ season 2: Ben McKenzie teases ‘very different show’ from season 1
The second season of “Gotham” is going to be coming to Fox starting on Monday night, and it certainly feels already like you are not going to get the same exact show that you had the first time around. That show had a heavy procedural element, villains who are easily forgettable, and also a few characters like Barbara Kean and at times Selina Kyle who were without a clear direction.
The good news now is that the show has figured out some of what worked and what didn’t; they can work out the kinks, and give a story that is tighter, sharper, and at times darker. While you’re not going to see Batman, it may feel more like the Gotham City that is in the comic books than one that was somewhat amorphous through season 1.
For more on what the show is planning, check out what star Ben McKenzie told Entertainment Weekly on the subject:
“It is a very, very different show … It is almost completely serialized. We’re aiming for a grander, saga-type construction in which we can actually sit with the characters and understand their motivations and how the turbulence of their lives affects the greater landscape.”
The show is going to start off with villains aplenty. While the likes of Jerome and Barbara are locked away in Arkham, the arrival of the wicked and powerful Theo Galavan (along with his sister Jessica) is going to give these criminals an opportunity to be a part of some special squad he is putting together. Meanwhile, Oswald Cobblepot is running the city’s crime ring, and Edward Nygma is more than likely still on the rise.
