‘The Bastard Executioner’ premiere: Five reasons to watch Kurt Sutter’s ‘Sons of Anarchy’ follow-up
While the majority of television is in somewhat of a holding pattern until the fall TV season starts up next week on major networks, there is a huge entry coming at you tonight on FX in “The Bastard Executioner.” Starting at 10:00 p.m. Eastern time creator Kurt Sutter’s follow-up to “Sons of Anarchy” will begin, and you’ve got every reason in the world to want to watch live (or at least put it on your DVR).
Just in case you are looking for specific reasons, though, don’t worry: We’ve also got those for you below!
1. It’s completely different – Sure, there are some other medieval dramas that are out there, but this is really the first foray by FX into something that is centuries into the past. It’s also not going to be busting out dragons; instead, it is a gritty take on struggle, war, religion, and survival in a time where not everyone does.
2. The cast! – You’ve got Timothy V. Murphy, Katey Sagal, and Sutter coming over after acting on “Sons,” and in between Stephen Moyer (“True Blood”) and new lead Lee Jones, who has been getting rave reviews, there are a lot performances worth looking forward to.
3. The originality – In the age of remakes and revivals, isn’t it nice to have something that is completely fresh and original to check out?
4. You were already watching FX on Tuesdays in the fall anyway – Hey, putting the show on at 10:00 keeps things consistent. Hopefully “Sons” fans will stick around.
5. It’s Kurt Sutter – What other reason do you need? In between his contributions on “The Shield” and creating the world that he did with Jax Teller and company, he has built the reputation of one of television’s best showrunners. He is challenging himself by taking on both a period piece and something set far from California; this is a chance to see the fruits of that labor.
