‘The Walking Dead’ season 6 and the struggle to prevent spoilers
AMC has a lot invested in “The Walking Dead.” It is their highest-rated show, it has inspired both an aftershow and a spin-off, and thanks to all of this it needs to continue to find a way to draw headlines. Getting some events spoiled in advance are the sorts of things that set the show back.
There’s an interesting piece about spoilers and how the production handles them over on The Hollywood Reporter, and it makes it pretty clear just how massive an endeavor it really is to keep things under wraps. Showrunner Scott M. Gimple makes it clear that at this point, they are even battling the presence of drones flying over the set to take pictures:
“We do like preserving the story for the audience … With the advent of drones, it can become such a game of cat and mouse that as far as sneaking a peek at the actors walking to set, we want to just keep our actors safe and the people who might be looking safe — like [when they’re] in the street.”
The reality here is that there are always going to be a few people here and there who try to get spoilers. That’s just the nature of the beast. If these people have their own little corners of the internet, it really doesn’t cause that much trouble. It only becomes problematic when it gets into major publications and the producers really feel like something huge is being ruined. Traditionally, that has not happened yet.
The new “Walking Dead” season premieres on AMC Sunday, October 11, and hopefully things will remain under wraps until then.
