‘Gotham’ season 2 spoilers: Tigress, the Penguin, and many more populate latest promo

What happens when you combine old-school cars, explosions, and a really creepy version of “In the Air Tonight”? More or less, you’ve got the latest promo for “Gotham” season 2 rolled up into a tiny little ball.

This new promo was posted recently by Fox on the show’s official Twitter feed, and the checklist of villains is pretty clear: Oswald Cobblepot, the Tigress, Edward Nygma, Barbara Keen, Jerome, and many more are all present and accounted for, with many of them doing potentially terrible things. Interestingly, for the Penguin his terrible thing seems to be mostly laughing in Jim Gordon’s face about the prospect of the two working together.

Hyping up all of these villains is certainly cool from a story vantage point, but it is also a very smart move for Fox to make at this point. We imagine that they are very well aware at this point that the show’s ratings slipped somewhat over season 1, and ultimately villains sell! Gordon is a good-natured cop at the end of the day, and he’s not going to be the selling point for everyone. The show has to appeal to some casual Batman fans while still leaving something for the future … not just for the show, but for Bruce Wayne several decades down the road. It’s a tough balancing act for a show that is probably never going to get to the Batman years.

We feel like the show started to figure out more of what worked in the second half of season 1, and so long as they continue that, they should be in better shape throughout season 2.
