Kurt Sutter details ‘Sons of Anarchy’ companion series; different setting, characters
Is the new series set in the “Sons of Anarchy” universe about the Mayans a proper “spin-off”? Apparently, this is a word that creator Kurt Sutter does not like to utter. It turns out that it is so much more complicated than that; plus, it really doesn’t seem like there is going to be too much connective tissue to the original show other than the universe. We’re calling it for now a “companion series,” though that is probably not the right term for it, either.
After the news broke that he was developing a new project with FX earlier this week, Sutter shared a series of posts on Twitter giving some more information on the show. Here are a few things that we learned.
1. While Sutter will be co-creating the show, he would hand of the showrunner reigns to someone else if it moves forward. It makes sense, given that he is busy with “The Bastard Executioner.”
2. It will not be set in the same part of the world.
3. He would love to find a way to get Alvarez, the most notable of the “Sons of Anarchy” Mayans, involved even if we have a different setting for the show.
4. It’s still a long ways off. It’s not happening this year, and it may not even happen next year unless things start to move along quickly.
Ultimately, we still feel like true fans of the show are going to be fine with waiting for a while to see something happen. Let things build and evolve organically, and this will be very much worthwhile in the end.
