‘The Astronaut Wives Club’ finale spoilers: The Moon landing and much more

Astronaut -We hope that you have enjoyed the journey of “The Astronaut Wives Club” over the past several weeks. After all, the story is coming to a close in just a matter of one week. There’s little to no hope of a second season, and given that the show is touching on everything from the Moon landing to Apollo 13 in the finale, it was probably intended to be the end.

“Landing” is fittingly the title for this hour, and if you look below, you can get a sense as to just what all of the important characters are going through as the great space race starts to come to a close:

“It’s 1969, and Apollo 11’s historic moon landing is cause for worldwide celebration and a high point for the Astro-families. The wives are interviewed for a TV documentary on the space program, Gordo is passed over for the next mission, and Trudy faces some big decisions about her personal and professional future. Betty finds a powerful way to honor Gus’s legacy and advocate for change. In April 1970, the nation watches the fraught voyage of Apollo 13.”

For the most part, the question with the finale is not so much how in the world the story will end (that is based more in history), but rather what the tone will be. Over the course of this season, the show has created many different mental images for what space should be. There’s a form of imperialism here, and at times we feel like we are meant to admire these heroes. However, at the same time the show does not blind you to the dangers, and the sense of unease and dread that comes with every mission. We feel like we are meant to admire America’s accomplishments in this series, but not without a reminder of just what these missions cost in terms of human emotion.
