‘Coach’: Is NBC revival set to kill off major important character?

The more we are hearing about the attempt to revive “Coach” as a major network institution, and the more we are starting to feel a little bit as though this may not be the right idea after all. There was already the question as to whether or not a once-popular series would appeal to a new or younger audience (your answer: probably not), and to go along with that there are also questions now regarding whether or not some of the most important cast members are even going to be around to make this a revival worth having.

Here is the fairly-shocking news that we have for you today. According to a new report from TVLine, Hayden Fox’s wife Christine (played originally by Shelley Fabares) may not be a part of the new series, as the writers are currently planning to have her die at some point between the end of the previous series and the time of the revival, which is a heavy storyline for a show that it supposed to be a comedy.

To a certain extent, we imagine that there is at least a certain element of realism to this. We understand that people do die, and that is something that has to be contended with as you get older. At the same time, however, this is a sitcom. These are the sort of shows you watch to get away from depressing real life situations and envision that everyone lives happily ever after. Maybe this is about how Hayden moves forward and finds a new way to be happy, but this is not going to be an easy sell to fans of the original show.

As of right now, the premise for the show is Craig T. Nelson’s character coming out of retirement to help his son coach an Ivy-League team. The series is not currently scheduled for the 2015-16 season, so it will still be a while before we see any episodes air.
