‘Doctor Who’ season 9: Peter Capaldi comments create premature internet panic

Doctor Who -It wouldn’t be the British press if they were doing something other than freaking out over any quote, right? This is what we seem to have today in regards to Peter Capaldi comments that are causing some to think that Clara Oswald could be killed on “Doctor Who” before we make it to the end of season 9. Capaldi made these comments, per The Mirror, in an interview with Doctor Who News. Let’s get to sharing that, mostly so we can dive into analysis once we are done:

“The thing that is tricky about the Doctor and his relationship with companions. You know, Christopher Eccleston said in his first episode, ‘I can see… everything. All there has ever been and all there ever will be. And that drives me mad’.

“So in a way, the Doctor knows the fate of all of his companions. That makes it… difficult. But [with Clara] he is deliberately enjoying the relationship and this great toy box of time and space that they can explore together. But of course, as it’s Doctor Who, there is an ever deepening shadow pursuing them.”

So here is what is somewhat ridiculous about the media freakout. We interpret Capaldi’s comment here as that all of the Companions die … eventually. That doesn’t mean that they are going to die tomorrow or the day after. They are not alien in the same way that he is! While they can travel through time and space through them, their time is finite in the way that any actor’s time on the show is.

Eventually we do imagine that Jenna Coleman will move on, and the same goes for Capaldi himself. We just do not have any indication that this is going to be coming at any point over the course of season 9 just yet. Maybe it does happen and Clara leaves, but to say so right now with limited evidence is speculation at best.
