‘Major Crimes’ season 4, episode 7 review: ‘Targets of Opportunity’

“Major Crimes” aired its seventh episode of season 4 last night, and it was one that can definitely be described as emotional. There is a certain weight to any case that revolves around the death of police officers, and tonight Fritz Howard was brought in after Leary and Tracy were both shot and killed after seeing an unmarked car for some reason pull another one over.

The killings in the episode were particularly senseless and sad, as these two officers did nothing altogether wrong other than just being in the wrong place and falling victim to a larger scheme around them. Getting Fritz aboard for the episode did add an extra punch; we do enjoy Jon Tenney’s work on the show, and while the Special Operations Bureau is not getting a spin-off series anymore as was once rumored, at least the series is finding still a use for them.

There are some cases where we are okay with the bad guys not getting caught, mostly because you want things to have a certain element of realism to them and the reality here is that the heroes do not always win in life. In this case, however, it was important to see Raydor and the team find those responsible and take down the entire operation. They did, and that was a rewarding moment of the hour.

Still, we may not remember much from this episode long-term other than Rusty continuing to take advantage of whatever resources he can to solve the Alice Herrera case. We admire his gumption, even using some time working on the tip line to figure out some more details and chase leads. With that said, could it be problematic that he is continuing to use department resources for this and also conducting much of the investigation in secret? We feel like you are left to wonder that after this episode. Grade: B.
